The Early Years
In 1981, as a crew member Cesareo Sanchez moved from California when Modern Method Gunite, Inc. was founded in Houston, TX. The company consisted of two crews with twelve employees. He formed a division of MMG in Boston in 1984 to overcome the economy in Houston. Following in 1989 Cesareo Sanchez became the primary owner of Modern Method Gunite, Inc. Boulder Creations was implemented in 1990.
In 2003, MMG became an official licensed applicator of Pebble Technology®. In 2010, MMG became the largest Pebble Tec applicator in the United States.
With headquarters, offices and operations located in Houston, Texas, MMG has grown to be the premier sub-contractor in the region and one of the largest in the United States, with three divisions: Gunite, Pool Finishes, and Boulder Creations.
With a continuously growing staff of well-trained employees, MMG is blessed to have over 200 commercial and residential clients, and averages over 7,000 projects a year!
A Family Company
In 2012, Modern Method Gunite was recognized as a finalist in Baylor Universities’ Institute for Family Business, Family Business of the Year.
As a true family business, owners, Carmen and Cesareo Sanchez along with their children, Cesar, Edgar and Karla, now share a significant part of operational responsibilities. The firm that started with an emphasis on rock-solid craftsmanship, customer service and innovation now benefits from the next generation’s formal business education as it expands from its Houston headquarters into Austin and San Antonio.
Though the company started more than 40 years ago, it became Modern Method in 1981, when Cesareo Sanchez and two partners moved it from the San Francisco Bay area to Houston and renamed it.
Pool Construction Veteran
By that time, Cesareo Sanchez was already a seasoned veteran. He had started with Anthony Pools in 1966, at the prompting of his uncle. He moved to the Bay Area company, Peninsula Gunite, in 1969, when his brother told him of a foreman opportunity. The move to Texas presented more career opportunity, and by 1989, Cesareo Sanchez and his wife Carmen owned Modern Method outright, after buying their partners out.
Though the Sanchez children began working in the family business at early ages, they worked hard to earn their management positions. Karla and Edgar earned their Bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration from Baylor University and rejoined the family business in the late 90’s. Both have implemented ideas that evolved from case studies and class projects while at Baylor, such as: developing an employee handbook, setting up 401k, profit sharing and health-insurance plans.
Still a Family Run Business
Modern Method Gunite continues to run as a family business. Cesareo Sanchez remains the President of Modern Method with Carmen Sanchez as the Vice President. Cesar Sanchez, Jr., serves as Vice President of Operations. Edgar Sanchez serves as the Chief Operating Officer; while, Karla Escobar serves as the Human Resource Manager. The goal is to successfully pass the company through to the next generations; having established the corporate culture of hard work and dedication with fruitful results.
